How many poles does a DC circuit breaker need?

TPB7-63 Applications

  • Residential rooftop PV.

Compact 1P and 2P versions protect individual strings in small rooftop arrays at DC 300V–600V, fitting standard consumer-unit-style enclosures on a 35mm DIN rail.

  • Commercial & industrial solar.

3P and 4P versions handle higher system voltages up to DC 1200V in C&I combiner boxes, providing resettable string and array protection without the replacement cost of fuses.

  • DC distribution & off-grid.

Used in battery and off-grid DC distribution boards where overload and short-circuit protection must be quickly resettable in the field, reducing downtime versus fuse-only designs.

DC MCB FAQs

Can a normal AC MCB be used for a DC solar circuit?

No. AC and DC MCBs are not interchangeable. DC arcs have no natural zero-crossing, so a DC fault requires an MCB with a DC-rated arc-extinguishing design. The TPB7-63 is built specifically for DC circuits up to 1200V and must not be replaced with an AC-rated MCB.

What DC voltage does the TPB7-63 support?

The TPB7-63 supports DC 300V (1P), 600V (2P), 900V (3P), and 1200V (4P). The poles are connected in series to reach the required system voltage, so the number of poles is selected according to the maximum DC system voltage.

What is the difference between a DC MCB and a DC fuse in a combiner box?

A DC MCB is resettable and can be switched off manually for maintenance, while a DC fuse must be replaced after it operates. The TPB7-63 MCB is often used for the main output disconnect or where frequent resetting is needed, while fuses protect individual strings.

Is the TPB7-63 suitable for 1000V and 1500V PV systems?

The TPB7-63 covers DC systems up to 1200V using its 4P configuration, suitable for most 1000V PV systems. For 1500V systems, a higher-rated DC breaker is configured on request according to the array voltage.
