Product Overview

A TPM7n DC molded case circuit breaker is rated 63–800 A and up to 1500 V DC, with an ultimate and service breaking capacity of 20 kA (Icu = Ics) and a thermal-magnetic trip unit. At 1500 V DC it remains within the IEC low-voltage range, so no high-voltage switchgear qualification is required to specify or install it.

Two frame sizes cover the 63–800 A band: the TPM7n-320 frame (63 to 320 A, in 2P and 3P) and the TPM7n-800 frame (400 to 800 A, in 2P only).

The TPM7n differs from the TPM7 in two ways that matter at system level. First, insulation per pole is higher: a TPM7n-320 pole withstands 500 V DC, so 2P reaches DC 1000 V and 3P reaches 1500 V DC, while a TPM7n-800 pole withstands 750 V DC and reaches 1500 V DC with only two poles. Second, service breaking capacity equals ultimate breaking capacity — Ics = Icu = 20 kA — so the breaker can be returned to normal service after interrupting a maximum-level fault, where the TPM7 recovers to 15 kA against an Icu of 20 kA.

Typical positions are the outgoing side of an array combiner cabinet, the DC input of a central or string inverter, and main feeders in DC distribution cabinets on utility-scale plants.

For systems at DC 1000 V and below, or for currents up to 250 A, the more compact TPM7 series DC MCCB is normally the better choice.

TPM7n Technical Specifications

The TPM7n covers 63–800 A across two frame sizes: the TPM7n-320 (63–320 A, 2P or 3P) and the TPM7n-800 (400–800 A, 2P). Each TPM7n-320 pole withstands 500 V DC and each TPM7n-800 pole withstands 750 V DC; both frames carry a rated insulation voltage of 1600 V, Icu = Ics = 20 kA, and are engineered to align with IEC 60947-2.

How to Select the Right Frame and Pole Configuration

A 1500 V DC array is protected by a 3-pole TPM7n-320 up to 320 A, or by a 2-pole TPM7n-800 from 400 A to 800 A.A TPM7n-320 pole withstands 500 V DC and a TPM7n-800 pole withstands 750 V DC, so the frame is selected from the rated current and the pole count follows from the system voltage.

Three practical notes:

  • At DC 1000 V, a 2P TPM7n-320 replaces a 4P TPM7.
Both are rated for the same system voltage, but the TPM7n uses half the poles — 76 mm of panel width instead of 121 mm.
  • The TPM7n-800 reaches 1500 V DC with two poles
, because each pole withstands 750 V DC. No 3P version is offered on this frame.
  • 1500 V DC is still low voltage
under IEC definitions (≤ 1500 V DC). No high-voltage switchgear qualification is required to specify or install these breakers.

Applications

The TPM7n protects DC circuits from 63 A to 800 A at system voltages up to 1500 V DC — most often in array combiner cabinets, at the DC input of central and string inverters, and on main feeders in DC distribution cabinets.

  • Utility-scale PV array combiner cabinets — outgoing protection for combined string currents of 400–800 A on 1500 V DC arrays, downstream of string-level PV combiner boxes.
  • Inverter DC input protection — isolating and protecting the DC feed into central or string inverters.
  • DC distribution cabinets — main and sub-feeder breakers in 1000 V and 1500 V DC panels.
  • Large commercial and industrial rooftop PV — where array current exceeds the 250 A ceiling of the TPM7 frames.
  • DC side of energy storage systems — protection between battery banks and the power conversion system on high-current DC buses.

FAQs

What is the maximum DC voltage of a TPM7n circuit breaker?

1500 V DC. On the TPM7n-320 frame, a 2P breaker is rated for DC 1000 V and a 3P breaker for 1500 V DC. On the TPM7n-800 frame, each pole withstands 750 V DC, so a 2P breaker reaches 1500 V DC.

Is a 1500V DC circuit breaker considered high voltage?

No. Under IEC definitions, direct current up to 1500 V remains within the low-voltage range. A 1500 V DC array is a low-voltage DC system and is protected with low-voltage devices such as the TPM7n.

Why does the TPM7n have Ics equal to Icu?

Ics is the fault current after which a breaker can return to normal service; Icu is the maximum it can interrupt at all. On the TPM7n both are 20 kA, so the breaker remains serviceable after clearing a maximum-level short circuit. On the TPM7 series, Ics is 15 kA against an Icu of 20 kA.

Is TPM7n suitable for a string-level PV combiner box?

Usually not. String-level PV combiner boxes carry 63–250 A and are better served by the TPM7 frames, or by a DC MCB such as the TPB7-63. The TPM7n is sized for array combiner cabinets and DC distribution cabinets, where combined currents reach 320–800 A.

Does the TPM7n have a 4-pole version?

No. The TPM7n-320 is offered in 2P and 3P; the TPM7n-800 is offered in 2P only. Higher insulation per pole is what allows the TPM7n to reach 1500 V DC without a fourth pole.

Can TPM7n breakers be plug-in mounted?

Yes. Both frames are available screw-fixed to a base plate or in a plug-in version. Plug-in mounting shortens replacement time in cabinets where downtime is costly. TPM7n frames are not DIN-rail mounted.
