TPM7 Series DC Molded Case Circuit Breaker (63–250A)

TPM7 Series DC Molded Case Circuit Breaker (63–250A)

A TPM7 DC molded case circuit breaker is rated 63–250 A and up to DC 1000 V, with an ultimate breaking capacity (Icu) of 20 kA, a service breaking capacity (Ics) of 15 kA and a thermal-magnetic trip unit. Each pole withstands 250 V DC, so the pole count — 1P, 2P, 3P or 4P — sets the maximum system voltage the breaker can protect.

Two frame sizes cover the 63–250 A band: the TPM7-125 frame (63 / 80 / 100 / 125 A) and the TPM7-250 frame (160 / 180 / 200 / 225 / 250 A). Both frames are available in 1P, 2P, 3P and 4P configurations, so 2P covers DC 500 V, 3P covers DC 750 V and 4P covers DC 1000 V.

This makes the TPM7 a direct fit for string-level and small commercial arrays, where it is normally installed on the output side of a PV combiner box, or as the DC feeder breaker of a distribution board.

The breaker uses a thermal-magnetic trip unit, a bakelite thermoset housing and copper conductors, with a rated insulation voltage of 1600 V and an impulse withstand voltage of 8 kV. Rated ultimate breaking capacity (Icu) is 20 kA and rated service breaking capacity (Ics) is 15 kA. Screw-fixed and plug-in versions are both available, and alarm contacts, shunt releases and undervoltage releases can be fitted at the factory.

For systems above DC 1000 V, or for currents above 250 A, see the TPM7n 1500V DC MCCB series.

How to Select the Right Pole Configuration

A TPM7 pole withstands 250 V DC, so a DC 500 V array needs a 2-pole breaker, a DC 750 V array needs 3 poles, and a
DC 1000 V array needs 4 poles.

The frame size is set by the rated current; the pole count is set by the system voltage, not by the current.

System DC voltage 63–125 A 160–250 A
DC 500 V TPM7-125, 2P TPM7-250, 2P
DC 750 V TPM7-125, 3P TPM7-250, 3P
DC 1000 V TPM7-125, 4P TPM7-250, 4P
DC 1500 V not applicable — use TPM7n-320, 3P not applicable — use TPM7n-320, 3P

Two practical notes:

  • At DC 1000 V the TPM7 needs four poles.
If panel width inside the combiner box or DC cabinet is tight, a TPM7n-320 in 2P reaches the same DC 1000 V with two poles instead of four.
  • 1P (DC 250 V)
is listed for completeness in the specification table. It is rarely used in photovoltaic circuits and is not recommended for array protection.

Applications

The TPM7 is used for DC circuit protection between 63 A and 250 A at system voltages up to DC 1000 V — most often at the output of a PV combiner box, on the DC feeder to an inverter, and in DC distribution boards.

  • Residential and small commercial rooftop PV
    — DC feeder protection between the array and the inverter, typically 63–160 A.
  • PV combiner box output protection
    — installed on the outgoing side of a DC1000V PV combiner box to protect and isolate the combined array current.
  • DC distribution boards
    — main or sub-feeder breaker in DC panels rated up to 1000 V.
  • Off-grid and hybrid systems
    — DC-side protection where charge controllers and inverters share a common bus.
  • DC side of small energy storage systems
    — circuit protection between the battery bank and the power conversion system.

FAQs

What is the maximum DC voltage of a TPM7 circuit breaker?

Up to DC 1000 V. Each pole withstands 250 V DC, so the maximum operational voltage depends on the pole count: 250 V for 1P, 500 V for 2P, 750 V for 3P and 1000 V for 4P.

How many poles do I need for a DC 1000 V PV system?

Four poles. A 4P TPM7-125 or TPM7-250 covers DC 1000 V. If you need to save width, a 2P TPM7n-320 DC MCCB is rated for DC 1000 V with only two poles.

What is the difference between Icu and Ics on the TPM7?

Icu (20 kA) is the ultimate short-circuit breaking capacity — the maximum fault current the breaker can interrupt. Ics (15 kA) is the service breaking capacity, the fault current after which the breaker can continue in normal service. On the TPM7, Ics is 75 % of Icu.

Can a TPM7 be used inside a PV combiner box?

Yes. In a DC1000V PV combiner box the TPM7 is typically fitted on the output side, after the string fuses and surge protective device, to protect and switch the combined array current.

Is the TPM7 available with plug-in mounting?

Yes. Both screw-fixed and plug-in versions are available. Plug-in mounting shortens replacement time in cabinets where downtime matters.

When should I use TPM7n instead of TPM7?

Choose the TPM7n series when the system is DC 1500 V, when rated current exceeds 250 A, or when you need Ics equal to Icu (20 kA / 20 kA). Below DC 1000 V and up to 250 A, the TPM7 is the more compact and cost-effective option.
